TMUA 2021 Past Paper: Questions, Topics & Worked Solutions

The TMUA 2021 past paper broken down: what Paper 1 and Paper 2 covered, why it had the toughest top end of any recent paper, and real questions to try free with worked solutions.

Quick answer

The 2021 TMUA was two 75-minute papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each, no calculator, scored 1.0 to 9.0, run by Cambridge Assessment. Paper 1 tests applications of maths, Paper 2 tests reasoning. By our difficulty rating it had the hardest top end of any recent paper, including two questions among the toughest in the whole archive, so it is best saved for a late rehearsal. You can work through the real 2021 questions free on CrackTMUA, each with a full worked solution.

The 2021 TMUA has a reputation, and it is deserved. Run by Cambridge Assessment, it is the paper with the highest average difficulty of the recent sittings on our rating, and its Paper 1 ends with two of the hardest questions in the entire TMUA archive. If you want a paper that will show you the very top of the scale, this is it, but for exactly that reason it is a poor choice for a first attempt. This guide breaks down what the 2021 paper covered, why its ceiling is so high, and the notorious questions that define it, and it lets you try real 2021 questions with full worked solutions.

Key fact

The 2021 paper is unchanged in format from every paper since 2016: two 75-minute papers of 20 multiple-choice questions, no calculator, scored 1.0 to 9.0. Paper 1 is applications of mathematical knowledge; Paper 2 is mathematical reasoning. The content is standard AS and early A-level; what makes 2021 hard is how far its final questions push that content.

What the 2021 TMUA paper looked like

Like every TMUA sitting, 2021 was two separate papers taken on the same day:

PaperWhat it testsQuestionsTime
Paper 1Applications of Mathematical Knowledge2075 minutes
Paper 2Mathematical Reasoning (logic, proof, deduction)2075 minutes

That is 40 questions in two and a half hours, all multiple-choice, all calculator-free, with no negative marking, so you should answer every question. The two papers combine into a single score on the 1.0 to 9.0 scale. Here is the opening question from the 2021 Paper 1, a friendly start before the paper ramps up; it rewards a clean picture of two circles rather than heavy algebra:

How hard was the 2021 paper?

This is what 2021 is known for. On CrackTMUA's own 1 to 9 difficulty rating (our calibration of every question, not an official statistic, since the exam board does not publish per-question data), 2021 has the highest average difficulty of the recent papers, and it is the only recent paper whose Paper 1 ends with two questions we rate at the very top of the scale, back to back. The early and middle questions are approachable; the sting is in the tail.

That shape matters for how you use it. Sitting 2021 cold, you can cruise through two thirds of Paper 1 and then hit a wall that eats your remaining time and your confidence. So build your pacing on a gentler paper such as 2023 first, and bring 2021 out only once you can already hold your timing, as the toughest rehearsal before the real thing.

One number matters more than the difficulty rating: there is no negative marking. On a paper with a brutal tail, that is decisive; if you are running out of time on the last few questions, put an answer down for every one rather than leaving them blank. Remember too that the exam board does not publish grade boundaries, so there is no fixed raw mark that guarantees a grade; scores are scaled each sitting. Topics tested in the 2021 paper

The 2021 paper covered the full breadth of the syllabus. Paper 1 drew on algebra and surds, coordinate geometry, differentiation and integration, indices and logarithms, sequences and series, trigonometry, functions and graphs, inequalities, and a little statistics. Paper 2 layered logic, proof and number theory on top, testing whether you can reason about statements rather than just compute answers.

The hardest 2021 questions are notable for fusing topics that your textbook keeps apart, trigonometry with logarithms, or logarithms with coordinate geometry, so that recognising what to do is harder than doing it. The lesson holds for every year: no chapter is safe to skip, but the reasoning of Paper 2 is the part most candidates under-prepare. For the full topic map, see the TMUA syllabus guide, and for the reasoning half, Paper 2: logic and proof.

Paper 1 vs Paper 2 in the 2021 paper

The two 2021 papers are hard in different ways, and it is worth feeling that difference for yourself. Paper 1 dresses up maths you recognise so that the obvious method is slow and a clever observation is fast. Here is a mid-paper Paper 1 question from 2021, the kind of turning-point problem you should be able to do quickly and cleanly:

Paper 2 removes the calculation almost entirely and asks whether an argument holds: which statement must be true, which deduction is valid, where a printed proof breaks. It is a genuinely different muscle, and it is why candidates who only revise content freeze on Paper 2. If the reasoning style is new to you, drilling it in clusters is far more effective than meeting it cold. Our guide to Paper 1 vs Paper 2 breaks down how to approach each.

The standout questions of 2021

Most papers have one very hard question. The 2021 Paper 1 finishes with two of them, back to back, and both sit at the very top of our difficulty scale. Here is the first: an equation that looks impossible until you separate what the exponent is doing from what the sine is doing. Do not expect to crack it in four minutes; sit with it, and read the worked solution carefully, because seeing the key idea is how you learn to spot the same move next time:

The very next question, on the length of a curve defined by an equation in logarithms, is just as hard and hides an elegant collapse once you respect the domains. Together they are as tough as the TMUA gets, and questions at this level are exactly what separate a 6.5 from an 8.0. Only a handful exist across all the papers; we collect the toughest in our roundup of the hardest TMUA questions.

How to actually use the 2021 paper

Doing the paper once and checking your score wastes it, and with 2021's difficulty that is especially true. Use the three-phase method, treating 2021 as advanced material:

  • Familiarise on an easier paper first. Get the format and pacing solid on a gentler year, then come to 2021 already comfortable.
  • Drill by topic. Pull the harder 2021 questions apart by topic and difficulty, mixing them with the same question types from other years so you build pattern recognition.
  • Sit it timed, last. Save a clean run of 2021 for one of your final timed mocks. If you can keep your composure through its tail, the real paper will feel manageable.

The review is where the marks actually come from. For every question you got wrong, identify the specific move you missed, a faster method, a trap option, or a misread quantifier on Paper 2, and note it. The full progression is laid out in our complete TMUA study plan, and how many timed papers to sit is covered in the mock exams guide.

Practise the 2021 paper free

The clumsy way to study the 2021 paper is a question booklet in one file and an answer key in another. The better way is interactive. On CrackTMUA the entire 2021 paper is a filterable question bank: every question has an instant, in-depth worked solution that names the trap and the fastest method, you can jump straight to the 2021 questions or mix them with other years, and your attempts, flags and weak topics are tracked so you know what to review.

It is free at 10 questions a day, and premium is a one-time £37 for 12 months if you want the whole library, every official paper plus 100+ original questions and 18+ full mocks, with no daily cap. The best next step is simply to start: open the 2021 questions in the practice bank and try a few, or read the complete past-papers guide for how the full collection fits together.
