Ask around any TMUA forum and you will hear confident answers about which year was brutal and which was a gift, almost always based on the one paper the poster happened to sit last week. We can do better than anecdote. Every released official question in the CrackTMUA bank carries a difficulty rating, which means we can compute the average difficulty of every year and every individual paper, rank them, and name the hardest with actual numbers attached. That is what this guide does.
How we ranked the years
The released TMUA material is the specimen plus a full sitting (Paper 1 and Paper 2, 20 questions each) for every year from 2016 to 2023: nine sittings, 360 questions in all. Each question in our bank is rated on a difficulty scale from 1 to 9, tuned so that harder ratings mark the questions that separate high scorers from the rest. For each year we computed two things: the mean rating across its 40 questions, and the share of questions rated 7.0 or above, which measures how heavy the paper's hard tail is. The two together tell you more than either alone, because a paper can be uniformly firm without any monsters, or mostly gentle with a vicious final page.
Key fact
These ratings are CrackTMUA's own difficulty model, applied consistently across all 360 released questions. They are calibrated to behave like the official 1 to 9 reporting scale, but they are our numbers, not UAT-UK data: the exam board publishes no per-question statistics at all. Consistency is what makes the comparison fair, since every year is measured with the same instrument.
For context, the average rating across all 360 questions is 5.9. So the spread you are about to see, from 6.2 at the top to 5.5 at the bottom, is a real difference you would feel while sitting the papers, but it is a difference of degree: no released year is a different exam in kind.

Two ties need breaking honestly. At the top, 2021 edges 2022 by a hair on the unrounded means, 6.19 against 6.16, with both years putting a remarkable 30% of their questions at 7.0 or above, triple the share of a typical year. In the middle, 2020 and 2019 have identical means to two decimals (5.98); we place 2020 ahead because more of its questions sit in the 7.0+ tail (15% against 10%), so it feels harder to a strong candidate even though the average candidate would notice no difference.
A quieter surprise is 2016. The very first live sitting is the third-hardest year in the whole archive, so "start with the oldest papers because they are easier" is simply false for the TMUA. And note 2017's odd shape: a modest mean but a 17.5% hard tail, a gentle paper with a sting in it.
The hardest year: 2021
2021 takes the title because it is hard everywhere at once. Paper 1 averages 6.18 and Paper 2 averages 6.20, so there is no soft paper to recover on, and each paper puts six of its twenty questions at 7.0 or above. Then there is the tail. The 2021 sitting ends with the single most feared stretch in the released archive: Paper 1 question 19, rated 8.0 on our model, an exponential-and-trigonometry equation where you must count solutions in a range, followed immediately by question 20, rated 7.5, a logarithmic equation whose "length of a curve" phrasing convinces candidates they need calculus they were never taught. Paper 2 adds two more 7.5s of its own, a necessary-and-sufficient question on exponentials (question 17) and a heavy trigonometric calculation (question 19).
The pattern across all four: none of them uses content beyond the syllabus. They are hard because each hides one collapsing insight behind a wall of apparent work, which is exactly the kind of difficulty you can train for. Our 2021 paper breakdown covers the sitting question by question.

The single hardest paper: 2020 Paper 2
Here is the finding that surprises people: the hardest individual paper is not from 2021 or 2022. Ranking all eighteen released papers separately, 2020 Paper 2 tops the list with a mean of 6.25, ahead of 2021 Paper 2 (6.20), 2021 Paper 1 (6.18) and 2022 Paper 1 (6.18).

What makes 2020 Paper 2 remarkable is its shape. It contains no question we rate 8.0; its ceiling is question 19, a 7.5 deduction problem fusing logic with sets and counting. Instead it is relentless: six of its twenty questions sit at 7.0 or above and almost nothing on it is a giveaway, so there is nowhere to bank easy marks and settle your nerves. Candidates who sat it describe exactly that grinding feeling. Meanwhile 2020 Paper 1 is one of the gentler Paper 1s (mean 5.70, nothing above 6.5), which is why 2020 as a year only ranks fourth: one relentless paper, one forgiving one.
The lesson: "hardest year" and "hardest paper" are different questions with different answers, and a year's reputation is usually set by its nastier half.
Where the very hardest questions live
The top of the scale is concentrated in a tiny set. Across all 360 released questions, only four earn an 8.0 on our model, and three of them sit in the 2021 and 2022 papers: the 2021 Paper 1 exponential-trig counting question (q19), the 2022 Paper 1 problem on two shaped polynomials (q18), and the 2022 Paper 2 question below. The fourth is the specimen's famous five-logicians puzzle.

A polygon is inscribed in a circle and cut into triangles of equal area, and you must decide for which the given properties are sufficient to pin down the polygon. It fuses trigonometry with the logic of sufficiency, and it is worth ten minutes of your life. Attempt it before revealing the solution:

The gentlest years, and what they are for
At the other end, 2023 is the gentlest released year by a clear margin: a mean of 5.5, only 5% of questions at 7.0+, and its Paper 1 (mean 5.20) is the softest single paper in the archive. The specimen (5.7) and 2018 (5.8) sit just above it. Gentle does not mean worthless; it means these are the right papers for the start of your preparation, when the goal is absorbing the question style without being flattened by it, a strategy our past papers hub builds into its three-phase method.
One warning about 2023: because it is both the most recent and the easiest released year, it is the single most misleading paper to calibrate your expectations on. Score well on 2023 alone and you may be half a band worse than you think. Balance it with 2021 or 2022 before you believe any practice score, and see is the TMUA hard for how the difficulty feels overall.
Paper 1 vs Paper 2 across the years
A cross-cutting pattern worth knowing: Paper 2 rates harder than Paper 1 in eight of the nine released sittings. The gap is largest in 2018 (5.50 against 6.10) and 2020 (5.70 against 6.25), and only 2022 reverses it, its Paper 1 out-rating its Paper 2 by a sliver. This matches what most candidates report: the reasoning paper feels harder because school maths never trains its style. Does sitting a hard year hurt your score? No.
A final point that defuses most of the anxiety behind "which year is hardest": the scoring is calibrated per sitting, so a harder paper needs fewer raw marks for the same scaled score. The 1.0 to 9.0 scale exists precisely so that a 6.5 earned on a 2021-difficulty paper and a 6.5 earned on a 2023-difficulty paper mean the same standard of performance. You cannot be unlucky with a hard year in your final result, only in how the exam feels on the day. How that calibration works is covered in TMUA score conversion.
Where the ranking does matter is preparation, in three practical ways:
- Sequence your papers. Start with 2023, the specimen and 2018 to learn the style, then climb. Meeting 2021 in week one teaches you little except doubt.
- Save the hardest for timed mocks. Sit 2021 and 2022 under strict exam conditions late in your preparation, when a hard result is information rather than discouragement.
- Read your scores in context. A raw 13/20 on 2020 Paper 2 is a genuinely strong performance; the same mark on 2023 Paper 1 is not. Without the table above, both look identical in your notebook.
Tip
Rate your own mocks against the year you sat, not against your best-ever score. A two-mark drop when you move from 2023 to 2021-level material is the difficulty gap, not a decline, and panicking over it is the most common way applicants misread their own progress in the final weeks.
